Booting is the process of loading the operating system into the system memory (RAM) after the system is powered on. Understanding it helps in diagnosing boot failures or optimizing startup.

๐Ÿงฉ 1. BIOS/UEFI Initialization

  • ๐Ÿ”Œ Triggered When: You power on the computer.

  • ๐Ÿง  What Happens: The BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) or modern UEFI firmware takes control before Windows loads.

๐Ÿ›  Main Tasks:

  • POST (Power-On Self-Test) runs โœ…

    • โœ… Checks CPU, RAM, keyboard, etc.

    • โœ… Confirms bootable disk is available.

    • โœ… Reads system configuration from CMOS ๐Ÿงพ

๐Ÿ’ฝ 2. MBR/GPT Execution

  • ๐Ÿง  BIOS โ†’ MBR (Master Boot Record)

    • ๐Ÿ“Located in the first sector (sector 0) of the boot disk.

๐Ÿ”Ž MBR Tasks:

  • Identifies the active partition ๐Ÿงฉ

  • Loads the boot sector of that partition

  • Transfers control to Boot Manager

๐Ÿ“Œ Note: On UEFI-based systems, MBR is replaced with GPT, and Bootmgr.efi is used from the EFI System Partition.

๐Ÿช› 3. Bootmgr.exe Loads

  • ๐Ÿ‘ค Bootmgr = Windows Boot Manager

  • Located in: C:\bootmgr

  • Switches CPU to protected mode ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ (to use full memory)

๐Ÿ”„ It reads the BCD (Boot Configuration Data):

  • Contains:

    • OS location ๐Ÿ—‚

    • Boot options (e.g., Safe Mode ๐Ÿงฏ, Dual Boot)

๐Ÿ’ค 4. Hibernate or Cold Start?

  • ๐Ÿ” If Resuming from Hibernation:

    • ๐ŸงŸ Winresume.exe is used to restore the session.
  • โ„๏ธ If Cold Boot:

    • Winload.exe is loaded to begin OS startup.

๐Ÿš€ 5. Winload.exe โ€“ Windows Loader

  • Loads core OS files:

    • ๐Ÿง  ntoskrnl.exe โ€“ Windows Kernel

    • ๐Ÿงฌ hal.dll โ€“ Hardware Abstraction Layer

    • ๐Ÿ‘๏ธโ€๐Ÿ—จ๏ธ Essential drivers (like for disk, display, input)

๐Ÿ“Œ Kernel Mode is now active โ€“ memory, process management begin here.

๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ’ป 6. Kernel Initialization (Ntoskrnl.exe)

  • Initializes:

    • ๐Ÿงฎ Scheduler (multitasking)

    • ๐Ÿง  Virtual Memory Manager

    • ๐Ÿ’พ I/O systems

Starts the SMSS.exe (Session Manager Subsystem):

  • Reads registry hives ๐Ÿงฌ

  • Creates page file ๐Ÿ“„

  • Loads essential services like Winlogon

๐Ÿ” 7. Winlogon & User Environment Setup

  • Loads the logon screen (GUI) ๐ŸŽจ

  • Starts lsass.exe โ€“ Local Security Authority for authentication ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ’ป

  • Starts services.exe for background Windows Services โš™๏ธ

  • Loads user profile and desktop ๐Ÿ–ผ

โœ… Final Result: Windows Desktop ๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ is ready for use!

๐Ÿ“Š Summary Table:

๐Ÿงฌ Kernel InitNtoskrnl.exeStart system components

๐Ÿ“Œ Real-World Example:

If you see a "No Boot Device Found" error:

  • ๐Ÿ” Likely an issue in BIOS (no disk detected), MBR is corrupted, or Bootmgr is missing.

If Windows is stuck at a black screen after logo:

  • ๐Ÿ”ง Problem during winload.exe or ntoskrnl.exe phase (possibly a driver failure).
